Captive Husbandry Varanus Mertensi
Captive Husbandry of V. Mertensi.
I am housing 1.2 Adults in an 8’L, 4’W, 6’H Custom built Enclosure.
This Enclosure features a 300 gallon pond as Mertens are highly Aquatic!
In addition they have lots of climbing opportunities via logs, branches and cork tubes.
The land area doubles as a nest box for egg laying.
On the backside of this tub I use a large Kane Heat Panel to heat the soil from 80° F to 95° F.
I feed my Mertens a wide variety of whole prey items including Fish, Quail and Quail eggs, some Rodents and Krill as a treat.
Ambient Temperatures are steady at 80°F to 95°F with basking areas of 140°F.
Water Temperature is 80°F.
I keep them on a 12 hour on 12 hour off light cycle.
V. Mertensi are a hardy species of Monitor Lizard.
They have an extremely high prey drive and are SAVAGE feeders!
